Breanna Stewart Is Changing The Sneaker Game

We’ve only got about two more months until the start of this historic WNBA season (fantasy basketball for the win), which means it’s several weeks before we see Breanna Stewart, aka Stewie, back dominating the court again. Until then, the two-time champ and WNBA MVP is keeping busy with a new shoe deal.

On March 1st, eBay kicked off Women’s History Month with the Trailblazers Collection, an exclusive sneaker drop highlighting kicks designed or inspired by the industry’s most influential “trailblazing” women.

Joining eBay as their newest face on International Women’s Day, Stewie brings her life-long love of sneakers and experience as the first WNBA player to have a Puma signature shoe to the forefront. She continues to knock down doors for those looking to follow in her legendary footsteps.

We spoke to Stewart about what it means to pave the way for women in sneaker culture, her experience being the first WNBA player in over a decade to have a signature shoe and plenty more which you can read below.

Trailblazers Collection

ONE37pm: Congrats on this new partnership with eBay! When did you first discover your love for sneakers?

Stewart: I think I first discovered my love for sneakers when I was in junior high or high school. I was always looking on the apps to see when sneakers would be released and things like that. I always wanted new pairs, and I didn’t know why other than the fact that they were cool and colorful. Basketball shoes and off-the-court shoes were really important to me.

ONE37pm: What does it mean to be working with eBay to celebrate women who’ve paved the way in sneaker culture?

Stewart: Partnering with eBay for the Trailblazer collection is something that is really important to me because it’s highlighting women who have been designing shoes and making shoes for women to wear by continuing to uplift women in the sneaker space. To be able to do that alongside Vashti Kola is amazing because she’s really influential in the sneaker world.

ONE37pm: You are the first WNBA player in over a decade to have a signature shoe. How do you feel you can pave the way for young women following in your footsteps?

Stewart: I feel my partnership with eBay is paving the way for young women who will continue to have signature shoes after me because it’s going to raise the standard. Air Swoopes are a part of the Trailblazers Collection. From where we started with Sheryl Swoopes to my Stewie 1 that’s coming out this summer, I hope there are so many more W athletes with signature shoes coming, and we want to continue to put pressure on those in the shoe industry to support and get behind women.

ONE37pm: Is there anybody in the sneaker space that you admire personally?

Stewart: Obviously there are some that are a part of the Trailblazers collection such as Rihanna’s “Velvet Creepers.” Sophia Chang and June Ambrose also have drops with Puma that I love as well. Those are people that I look up to, and I want to continue to be my best for them so that we can all be our best.
