Which 12 New York Rappers You Should Know?

While New York’s rap movement is currently ignited by its combination of OG’s, superstars, and upstarts, another wave of talent is waiting to surface. Across the state of New York, specifically the tri-state area within Westchester County and New York City, MCs are steadily building their audiences while adding to their resumes.

Whether it’s releasing music videos that attract millions of views, collaborating with one of the culture’s biggest acts, or touring alongside a Grammy-nominated artist, this list of rappers has done a bit of everything and getting closer to introducing themselves to hip-hop’s mainstream audience.

Here’s our list of 12 New York rappers you should know.

Young Devyn
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/y5qZHllFo9A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Coming from Brooklyn, NY, Devyn has established herself as a talented rapper and songwriter with the ability to make many records– ranging from drill to soca. Over the past year, the 20-year-old MC has signed with Island Records, released a new EP (Baby Goat), and performed at Rolling Loud.

Dougie B
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wj8LUqpSXgU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Alongside his close friends and fellow collaborators, Kay Flock and B-Lovee, Dougie B has become a prominent Bronx drill act. Inspired by his infectious energy, Dougie has provided various standout verses (I.E., “T Cardi” and “I’m Back”), worked with fellow Bronx native and multi-platinum MC Cardi B, and performed at HOT 97’s Summer Jam earlier this month.

Malz Monday
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dzeaIykxj-o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Coming from Westchester County, NY, Malz has become an early favorite for those loving lyricism and storytelling. Coming off of his acclaimed December 2021 release, Super Heroes Don’t Exist, Malz has reached over 215,000 monthly Spotify listeners and is performing at the Mercury Lounge on July 2nd.

Ice Spice
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/U77JyALAfk0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

If you’re really into New York drill, you’ve probably entered a rabbit hole and discovered plenty of artists before– with Ice Spice being one of them. The Bronx, NY native is gaining a lot of steam right now as her standout single, “No Clarity,” has nearly 200K views on YouTube, and she got featured in Converse and Foot Locker’s Black Music Month campaign.

Kenzo B
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BWU2HqZR-pM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Within the last five months, Kenzo B has quickly caught the attention of fans around New York City, and for a good reason. Aided by her slick wordplay and smooth delivery, the NYC native is positioned to have a good summer as her “Bump It” single is consistently being played at events and throughout neighborhoods.

Niko Brim
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9vS7ge6rV5I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Whether as an activist who played a crucial role in making Juneteenth a national holiday to touring with Grammy-nominated MC, Cordae, Niko Brim‘s star has been steadily rising over the past year. The proud Mount Vernon, NY native, who’s also a co-founder of the buzzing rap collective, CYN, has been busy releasing new and well-received music— an April-released joint EP with Kai Ca$h titled ELEVEN53 and various freestyles.

STEELYONE
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oHKBtz7QTJE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Coming out of New Rochelle, NY, STEELYONE has become one of the Tri-State’s most respected and experienced lyricists. Fresh off releasing another stellar project in Lost City last January, the Stainless Global leader completed another sold-out overseas tour through Europe and is gearing up for more releases before the end of this year.

Iman Nunez
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qBrhbc1LLtw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

In recent years, Iman Nunez has produced one heck of a resume. Between exchanging verses with the legendary Styles P, performing alongside Lil Wayne and Machine Gun Kelly, and making his SXSW performance debut this year, the Yonkers, NY MC is sure to take off even more in 2022-’23.

Shawny Binladen
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RdilY1yO9qE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

The “King of Samples” may catch people by surprise with his name, but his music does all the talking. With “Whole Lotta Wickery” being a massive success and following singles such as “Shawn Ye” and “Hercules/Paradise” gaining traction, it’s not a surprise Shawny got added to Rolling Loud’s New York lineup for this coming September.

The Girll Codee
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7HjnQZ8NQb8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

The evolution of The Girll Codee over the last year is a clear example of consistency at its finest. Brooklyn’s Shaa Bigga and Siddity have done nothing but deliver incredible verses, great energy, and a fun live show– the latter, I witnessed during their performance at HOT 97’s Summer Jam. Next month, they’re reportedly releasing a new EP.

Melvoni
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Md-1ah25ge8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Regarding top-notch videos, Melvoni is one of the few artists from New York in that conversation– especially as an up-and-coming artist. “Feel Alive 2” is quickly becoming a standout record of his, and there’s a lot to like about Melvoni– great melodies, strong songwriting, and a good ear for production.

26AR
<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z6ALdScz8DI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>

Even though record labels are making a great effort to sign artists from New York, the pairing of Def Jam and 26AR makes me excited. Ever since his Rocko Ballin-assisted “MANEUVER” got over seven million YouTube views, the new Def Jam signee has been on a hot streak– most notably releasing “MY SET Pt.II,” “Beatbox Freestyle,” and most recently “Hottest In My City.”

The Five Best Moments From HOT 97 Summer Jam 2022

Among first-time and returning attendees of HOT 97’s Summer Jam concert, the same question remained: “Will it rain?” For what’s an annual tradition alongside the legendary NYC hip-hop radio station’s yearly display of the culture’s most popular stars, it tends to rain spectacularly upon those in attendance. But this year? The weather chose to relax and watch the show.

<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/p/CetLC1ruyGt/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

On Sunday (June 12th), the 28th annual HOT 97 Summer Jam took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, its usual location. The home of the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets was packed with thousands of attendees who first watched performances in the parking lot; before moving inside the stadium.

Headlined by the likes of platinum rappers Lil Baby and Lil Durk, this year’s Summer Jam lived up to its expectations of providing surprises and moments we won’t forget.

Here are the five best moments from HOT 97 Summer Jam 2022.

Young Thug shares a message to his supporters
<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/tv/CeuwF-yFn4j/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

Even though it’s been over a month since Young Thug was arrested on RICO charges, his presence has remained felt throughout the hip-hop community. As supporters of the YSL founder have come together to support him, fellow YSL labelmate Gunna, and others in the fight against hip-hop music getting used in court, the man himself shared a message to his fans.

“I just want to say thank you to all of my friends and my family for coming out and supporting us,” Thugger said. “You know, your support during this time means a lot to us, ya know.” All across the stadium, signs proclaiming “Protect Black Art,” “Free Young Thug,” and “Free Gunna” was proudly held high in the sky.

Cardi B surprises fans as she joins Bronx drill stars Dougie B and B-Lovee on stage
<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/reel/CeuJiWVK2K_/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

The first (and honestly the biggest) example of Summer Jam providing memorable surprise moments was earlier Sunday afternoon. During their festival stage performance, Bronx drill stars Dougie B and B-Lovee were joined by no other than Cardi B.

The proud Bronx, NY native and multi-platinum artist came out of a black Mercedes sprinter van to a thunderous ovation from fans as she performed her show-stealing verse from Kay Flock’s “Shake It” remix; which also features Dougie B.

Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, and other legends honor DJ Kay Slay
<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/tv/CeulS3nFgrK/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

Throughout hip-hop, especially in NYC, DJ Kay Slay left a massive impact on the culture in various ways— his ability to DJ, break new artists, host on HOT 97, and become a spokesperson for the city’s movement. After passing away from COVID-19 on April 17th, tributes have come at a rapid rate for the legendary DJ but what occurred on Sunday was special.

In tribute to the “Drama King,” Busta Rhymes, Papoose, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, The LOX, and Dipset (With Jim Jones and Juelz Santana) all came out and, performed their most popular records either made alongside him or in his honor. The MetLife faithful was routinely stunned as each legend stepped on stage and did their thing.

At the end of DJ Kay Slay’s tribute, Papoose spoke to the crowd and asked everyone in attendance to turn their phone light and wave it in the sky; further illuminating a beautiful sight to the “Drama King.”

Roddy Ricch makes last-minute apperance despite sudden arrest on Saturday
<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/tv/Ceu3WR-FGNG/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

While the popular Compton, CA MC was already in the tri-state area because of his slated appearance at Governors Ball the day before, he almost didn’t make it to either performance. That’s because “The Box” hitmaker was arrested for gun charges upon arriving at Governors Ball.

But 24 hours later, Ricch was on the Summer Jam stage, not only free but unbothered by those charges as they were dismissed. Halfway through his set, Ricch was joined by his frequent collaborator, producer DJ Mustard, as “High Fashion” and “Ballin” played to the fans’ approval.

City Girls and Chloe Bailey joined Fivio Foreign
<code><p class = "instagram-media">https://www.instagram.com/tv/Ceuyh6FFKHH/?utm_source=ig_embed\u0026amp;utm_campaign=loading</p></code>

Already amid a stellar year, Brooklyn’s own Fivio Foreign was given the honor of closing out this year’s Summer Jam. Aided by a montage declaring him the “King of New York,” Foreign’s set mixed in his most popular cuts, new music, and surprise appearances that kept the fans entertained.

As the “City of Gods” collaborator was performing “Hello” from his latest album, B.I.B.L.E, the crowd was surprised to see Chloe walk on stage. The talented singer/songwriter/producer effortlessly performed her verse from “Hello” and provided an up-close look as to what makes her a superstar in the making.

Fredo Bang is back with a new project, 2 Face Bang 2. After all of these years in the game, Gucci Mane remains one of the hardest working guys in hip-hop. He doesn’t let much time go by without releasing a single or two. In 2022, he dropped his YoungBoy Never Broke Again-diss, “Publicity Stunt”, the Young Dolph & Key Glock-assisted “Blood All On It” and “Rumors” with Lil Durk. This week he introduced the solo track, “Serial Killers.” Big Guwop glides over the menacing beat with his signature flow.

<code><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Jzf917KYNH0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></code>
