Most Important Pickleball Rules

Pickleball’s presence in the United States is soaring and that means players across the country continue to dive deeper into the sport.

With courts and facilities popping up all over the U.S., pickleball is becoming a force in the American sports landscape.

The sport has a rising number of youth players. Pickleball has primarily been a game for adults, but that is quickly changing.

[ MORE: Meet Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka ]

On the surface, it may seem close to tennis, but there are plenty of nuances that differentiate pickleball from other sports.

ONE37pm looks at some of the most important pickleball rules that every player should know before they hit the courts.

Basic Rules of Pickleball

Pickleball is played in a singles or doubles manner.

The sport is played on the same size surface regardless of singles or doubles play.

The pickleball court is 20 feet in width by 44 feet in length.

Getty

‘The Kitchen,’ also known as the No Volley Zone, is seven feet long on both sides of the court and players can only enter when the ball bounces.

The ball must bounce on each side once after serving before a player or team can volley.

How Does Serving Work?

Unlike tennis, players cannot use an upward motion on their serve.

Pickleball requires players to utilize an underhand serve and make contact with the ball near waist level.

Play starts once the ball reaches the subsequent box.

Getty

Another difference from tennis is that there aren’t double faults. A player can only serve once before turning the ball over to the next server.

In doubles, both players on a team have the chance to serve when the ball is on their serve.

The only time this doesn’t apply is on the opening serve of the match.

Players continue to serve until they or their team don’t earn a point.

How Does Scoring Work?

Players or their team only earn points on their serve.

Games are normally played to 11 points.

In doubles, players on the right side of the court serve when their score is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.).

When the serving team has an odd score (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc.) they serve from the left side of the court.

What is ‘The Kitchen?’

Players can only enter ‘The Kitchen’ when the ball bounces once.

Players are able to smash the ball anywhere else on the court other than in ‘The Kitchen.’

However, players cannot have their momentum carry them into ‘The Kitchen’ even after the ball has left their paddle.

The VeeFriends Series 2 Public Mint is Set for April 25th

Today, Gary Vaynerchuk—CEO and Creator of VeeFriends—released the info regarding the public mint of VeeFriends Series 2, the next evolution in his IP for the company.

VeeFriends in the last 10 months has become one of the top global blue chip NFT projects in the world, and is built primarily on characters and IP as a blueprint for how NFT projects should be.

What makes VeeFriends stand apart is the utility behind the NFT’, which include tickets to the upcoming VeeCon for all holders, as well as specific perks that come along with each character. This utility includes physical and digital gifts that only go to “Gift Goat” holders, tickets to sit court side at one Knicks game per year that go to holders of “Courtside Cats“, and one five minute FaceTime call with GaryVee himself per year for “FaceTime Fly” holders—to name a few.

All VeeFriends Series 1 holders were added to the Series 2 Friends list, making it possible for them to mint Series 2 NFT’ for just the cost of gas. VeeFriends Book Games holders were also added to the friends list if they were lucky enough to be selected.

However, there are still 10,000 Series 2 NFTs available for the public to mint. Here are the details:

1. What are the specifics of the VeeFriends Series 2 mint?
Jason Koeppel // ONE37pm
  • VeeFriends Series 2 is the next step in the evolution of the VeeFriends NFT project, and consists of 55,555 tokens.
  • The mint price will be set to $995 (in ETH) pegged to the price of Ethereum.
  • Series 2 will consist of 251 characters, including 236 characters from Series 1 and 15 new characters who are being officially introduced to the VeeFriends universe.
  • Public mint will have a total supply of 10,000 and will be on April 25th, 2022.
2. Where can I purchase the VeeFriends Series 2 tokens?
https://veefriends.com
VeeFriends.com

The NFT tokens will be released and available for purchase on VeeFriends.com.

If you have never purchased an NFT before, you will need to set up a metamask wallet. For a full explanation on how to do this, check out this article.

You will also need to purchase $995 worth of Ethereum. For a full explanation of how to do this, you can also check out this article. Because the price of Ethereum is volatile, I’d suggest purchasing a bit more to be on the safe side.

Also keep in mind that there will be a “gas fee” (which is a transaction fee), so it would probably make sense to purchase about $1200 worth of Ethereum.

“VeeFriends continues to be the culmination of so many things that I’d like to see in the world—the positive human traits that I think need to grow, and my continuation of passion in building an intellectual property in perpetuity,” GaryVee said of the forthcoming series. “We are on track to achieve what I had envisioned for VeeFriends, and we will continue to create real-life value through these NFTs. I am excited for what’s to come and for the opportunity to grow this amazing community even more,” said the multi-hyphenate entrepreneur.

To recap, the launch will take place over 4 minting periods:

  • Friends List (32,000 Supply) | Date: 4/18/22
  • Series 1 Free Claim (10,255 Supply) | Date: 4/18/22
  • Public Mint (10,000 Supply) | Date: 4/25/22
  • 15 New Characters (3,300 Supply) | Date: 4/27/22

Meet The 5s, Gary Vaynerchuk’s Major League Pickleball Team

On Wednesday, April 6, serial entrepreneur and pickleball big wig Gary Vaynerchuk revealed the name of his new Major League Pickleball team that will make its debut this season: the 5s. Named after Vaynerchuk’s favorite number, The 5s will feature Competitive Clown, a recently unveiled VeeFriends Series 2 character, as their logo.

“5 means the world to me in the context of sports as it was the first jersey number I received and wore when I came to the US.,” said Vaynerchuk. “My mom knitted that jersey for me, and the number 5 has always been my favorite ever since. Now it’s on our Major League Pickleball team and in our logo, alongside Competitive Clown, and I couldn’t be more proud to have that number, that means so much to me, as our team name.”

Major League Pickleball

With The 5s remaining more of a concept than an actual flesh-and-blood team until the Major League Pickleball Draft on May 28, general manager Ryan Harwood will work to construct the roster and shepherd the team through its inaugural season over the summer. A former tennis player at the University of Pennsylvania, Harwood has worked closely with Vaynerchuk for years, serving as the CEO of Gallery Media Group and the founder of PureWow and ONE37pm; in other words, he’s my boss and he’s tremendously handsome and strong.

“I think every sports fan as a kid dreams of being a GM or owner of a team,” Harwood told ONE37pm, “so I’m very pumped to flex those muscles and see what it takes.”

Drawing on his experience as an elite tennis player, Harwood hopes that his wealth of paddle-sports and management knowledge will translate to pickleball.

“I’m not the most avid pickleball player now,” said Harwood, “but I will become one. It’s really exciting to have the chance to learn about all the players and assemble the best team possible and create a culture the same way that we’ve done in the business world.”

For Vaynerchuk, The 5s represent the acme of an interest in the sport that’s been percolating for years. Like millions of other Americans, Vaynerchuk has fallen in love with pickleball, a passion that was born when he first picked up a paddle and teamed up with Andy Roddick to beat Harwood and Andre Agassi at a charity event four years ago. Unsurprisingly, Vaynerchuk plans on being an innovative and involved owner.

“I feel like I’m going to build strategies and help execute the growth of the sport through my ownership; I plan on being an active owner, not a passive one. It’s my job to put up the dollars and help draft the team, but also to be an ambassador for the sport. Pickleball now is where the NFL and NBA were in the 1950s and ‘60s.”

But beyond growing the sport and understanding the business of, in his words, “underpriced attention,” Vaynerchuk has a single, orienting goal: “I want to win championships.”

Gary Vaynerchuk Joins Major League Pickleball As Team Owner

On Tuesday, March 29th, serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk announced that he would become one of four new team owners in Major League Pickleball, an Austin, Texas-based elite pickleball league. Established in 2021, Major League Pickleball (MLP) will expand from eight to 12 teams for the 2022 season and feature 48 of the best men’s and women’s pickleball players in the world.

By adding Vaynerchuk to a roster of owners that already featured Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry and American tennis legend James Blake, MLP has demonstrated that pickleball is not just the sport of the future, but that it’s increasingly becoming the sport of the present as well.

“MLP is the most exciting brand in pickleball, a sport that I’m very excited to be coming into at such an important stage of its development,” Vaynerchuk said in a press release. “I’ve been watching the growth of the sport over the last couple of years, and waiting for the right opportunity to jump in.

“What MLP is creating is precisely what I think pickleball needs – innovation, equality, great competition, and a central focus on the social community that this sport creates.”

On May 28, the league  will hold its annual draft at Flushing Meadows’ USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where teams will build out their four-player roster for the upcoming season. The event will be livestreamed on on MLP channels including MajorLeaguePickleball.net, MLP YouTube and Facebook.

The regular season will begin the next weekend, with the first event of the year scheduled for June 3-5 at Dreamland in Dripping Springs, Texas. Excitingly, the finals of this event will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network, giving MLP exposure to a broad audience of potential fans.

Vaynerchuk has often said that his ultimate dream is to own the New York Jets and joining MLP is a promising step in that direction.

For more information on the upcoming MLP campaign, check out the league’s official website.

Listen to Juicy J and NLE Choppa’s New Single, ‘Load It Up’

Juicy J and NLE Choppa’s new collab is much more than just a traditional single. The track from the two Memphis rappers releases alongside a line of merch from Juicy’s cannabis venture, Asterisk (a brand which he and Gary Vee partnered up for) as well as a new strain available at MMD Dispensaries.

The first verse of the hook starts, “Juicy J the GOAT.” And the Juiceman doesn’t lie. The single and corresponding merch/cannabis strain are releasing today, but we’ll have to wait until next week to see the cinematic video the two rappers put together off this track. The video depicts Juicy J, a weed aficionado perhaps unlike any on earth, vibing amid lush cannabis plants and rolling up some of the strikingly designed Asterisk flowers.

Asterisk

The new strain will be available at MMD Dispensaries beginning today. Titled, “Mystic Potion,” the Juicy J signature strain is an Indica-leaning bud, which creates a happy, creative, euphoric high with a calm heavy body relaxation to relieve pain and stress. The flower is grown by the folks over at Cream of the Crop Gardens, and the quality of the big, dense nugs is immediately apparent visually.

Asterisk

All the merch for the strain /single release was designed by Cody Hudson and will be available here. The song, the video, and the merch all make you want to do one thing: load it up.

Bugha Talks About His Multi-Sport Ambitions With Gary Vee

Even if you’re not a serious gamer, chances are you’ve heard of Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf. The seventeen-year-old has taken the world by storm since becoming the first-ever Fortnite World Cup champion in 2019, beating 40 million competitors and taking home a prize of $3,000,000 at the age of 16. That win not only propelled Bugha into stardom (As of today, Bugha has 15.4 million followers across all platforms), but his dominance also captured the eye of Gary Vee.

Bugha joined Gary on episode eleven of his Marketing For The Now show to talk about his success & the life of a world-class esports athlete. In this episode, the two dive into what gamers really do behind the scenes, the newer generation of Fortnite players, and being able to dominate multiple esports in the vein of Shotzzy, Bo Jackson, and Deion Sanders.

To kick off the convo, Gary gave a quick nod to Bugha’s VaynerSports hoodie he was rockin’, before asking Bugha about some of the things fans may not know about the life of a professional gamer. Bugha made it clear that there’s way more to gamer life than “playing games and eating snacks all day.” The World Champ is always on his grind, looking for ways to get better daily.

People think that all gamers are nerds and play the game 24/7. But that’s not true. At least not for me.

Part of getting better each day also means studying your opponents. When asked by Gary about the upcoming Fortnite gamers, Bugha surprised viewers by revealing that he’s actually considered to be a “middle-aged” player at seventeen (yes, you read that correctly).

This new generation of Fortnite pros are between thirteen and fourteen, and Bugha noted that the new crop of players are constantly evolving, and are more mechanical in the way they are approaching the game.

Players are evolving all the time. The younger ones (thirteen to fourteen) are kind of coming and pushing the older ones out because they are so much more mechanical in their fighting style. I’m seventeen, so I’m actually considered middle-aged in the Fortnite scene. It’s kind of crazy!

Bugha winning the ‘Fortnite’ World Cup in 2019

The final question Gary Vee had for the Fortnite World Cup champ was whether or not he planned to expand his talents. The answer to that question was an immediate & emphatic, YES. Bugha told Gary that while being a multi-game player isn’t for everyone, he believes he has the mental drive to learn and dominate more than one game on a world-class level. If there’s one thing that the young champion does not lack, it’s confidence, and rightfully so.

Any game I’m going to, I’m always trying to get really good at. That’s just my competitive drive.

It’s certainly been fun watching Bugha’s success over the past year, and we are definitely looking forward to following along as his career continues to evolve.

VaynerSports Launches Gaming Division, Adds Fortnite Champ Bugha

One week after expanding into baseball, VaynerSports co-founders Gary and AJ Vaynerchuk announced the launch of VaynerGaming, a new division focused on esports athletes and gaming personalities.

Founded in 2016 as a football agency, VaynerSports looks to continue their disruption of the traditional sports representation landscape with their third division, with future expansion announcements coming soon.

“I have been quietly paying attention to the gaming industry for over a decade, building relationships and following the trends. One of the most exciting things about it, for me, is the gamers themselves. And when I look at the culture, the interest in the sector from other athletes, artists, celebrities – it is enormous. This is a very significant expansion for VaynerSports” Gary Vaynerchuk said.

Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, the 2019 Esports Gamer of the Year, is VaynerGaming’s first client. Bugha originally signed with Vaynerchuk’s agency after earning overnight success, and a $3 million prize, when he won the inaugural Fortnite World Cup last summer. Reed Bergman, managing partner at VaynerTalent, oversaw his initial representation until VaynerGaming launched this month.

Bergman and VaynerSports Executive Vice President Mike Neligan have worked together to secure lucrative long-term partnerships for Bugha with Samsung, Mondelez, and retail chain Five Below, along with an appearance in the Sabra Hummus Super Bowl commercial this past February – produced by VaynerMedia. The team has also brokered a long-term, exclusive streaming partnership with Twitch and renegotiated Bugha’s existing team deal with the Sentinels.

Gaming industry veteran Darren Glover will serve as the division lead and work closely alongside Neligan and VaynerSports Co-CEO, AJ Vaynerchuk. Prior to joining VaynerSports, Glover has helped professional athletes, celebrities and esports athletes build their communities inside the world of gaming.

“While lucrative, the gaming industry is still the wild wild west and unlike other sports, relevancy is not necessarily tied strictly to performance or wins and losses. I don’t believe anyone has a better ‘secret sauce’ than what Gary and the Vayner ecosystem does for brands, talent, and professional athletes. I’m extremely excited to implement that strategy on behalf of esports athletes, gaming content creators, and VaynerSports athletes as we launch a first of its kind agency division” Glover said.

Also, joining VaynerGaming is content and brand strategist, Brandon Hatcher, who has led the content development for Bugha’s brand over the past nine months, yielding more than 300% social media growth. Tyler Schmitt, Gary’s Office of the CEO, has served as Bugha’s day to day manager and will continue to play a vital role in the expansion of VaynerGaming and future clients.

“The strategy for Bugha for the past nine months has proven successful and we’ve put the pieces in place to scale and bring on additional players and personalities that we can elevate to a whole new level” Schmitt explained.

Gary Vee Expands VaynerSports to the Baseball Diamond and Beyond

If there is one thing that Gary Vaynerchuk is not known for, it’s resting on his laurels. The founder of powerhouse agency VaynerMedia, a board member for multiple Fortune 500 companies, best selling author, and a serial investor, it is safe to say that Gary Vee knows the business and is smart with his money.

Ever the passionate sports fan, especially when it comes to the New York Jets, Vaynerchuk launched VaynerSports in 2016 with his brother AJ Vaynerchuk. A brand new sports agency, VaynerSports, focused exclusively on football, setting out to create a company that featured excellent contract advisory, superior service, innovative marketing and endorsements, and mentorship in the world of sports, social media, and more.

For four years, VaynerSports has done just that for its clients, but the agency is now looking beyond the gridiron to provide services to professional athletes. With the creation of VaynerBaseball, VaynerSports will be servicing players on the baseball diamond and beyond.

VaynerBaseball, this new arm of VaynerSports, will be led by Greg Genske as CEO, one of the biggest sports agents in the game. Bringing more than two decades of experience in the sports agents business, Genske has also negotiated more than $4 Billion in athlete contracts throughout his career. Genske will also be bringing his partners from the GEM Agency with him. With a combined 50 years’ experience in sports management, VaynerBaseball has all the potential in the world to become a powerhouse. Genske’s excitement is palpable, saying: “Gary’s visionary branding and marketing expertise will allow the concept behind the creation of GEM to flourish and provide our clients with access to a portfolio of services unmatched in the player representation industry.”

Mike Neligan, a sports marketing superstar who has worked at VaynerSports for over nine months, will continue his work as the parent company’s Executive Vice President. Neligan has worked with athletes, brands, and properties across numerous professional leagues, including the MLB, NBA, NFL, PGA, NASCAR, F1 racing and Esports.

He also has experience working with legendary athletes like Derek Jeter, Danica Patrick, Clayton Kershaw, Matt Ryan, Kevin Love, and Tiger Woods, so his experience, work ethic, and strategies will be invaluable to the agency.

“Today is a marquee moment in the world of athlete representation as we expand our offering into the world of baseball. When you add someone with the negotiation savvy of Greg to the disruption my brother, AJ, and I bring along with Mike Neligan’s success marketing high profile athletes, you create an absolute force to be reckoned with,” Gary had to say with regards to the announcement.

Justin Turner, All-Star third baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be one of the agency’s first clients and will help pave the way for the agency to leave a giant footprint on the sports media landscape.

6 Gary Vaynerchuk Quotes to Motivate You

Gary Vaynerchuk has established himself as a thought leader and pioneer in digital marketing. After expanding his family’s wine business in New Jersey for years (which spawned the popular YouTube channel WineLibraryTV and a subsequent wine brand called Empathy Wines), Vaynerchuk is now a lauded public speaker, author, entrepreneur and investor.

Vaynerchuk is also the chairman of VaynerX, a communications company that holds media properties—one being ONE37pm!— and a social-media agency for major brands.

In addition to his commercial successes, Vaynerchuk also spits genuine wisdom via a massive Instagram account and numerous other platforms. Here, his beloved team behind the machinations of his personal brand and content share their favorite Vaynerchuk quote of all time. From Sinan Deriş, the Paid Media and Project Manager on Team GaryVee to Siddharth Astir, the Brand Manager for Vaynerchuk, these quotes are truly the top pearls to know, remember and revisit during your entrepreneurial career. Take a look.

1. “Doing the right thing is always the right thing.”

Everyone knows what’s “good” for them and what’s the “right thing” to do for the world. Especially in these times, if everyone has the moral compass to do the right thing we’ll be in a great place. Effort matters, and we have to match our actions and effort with doing the right thing for ourselves and for others around us. —Sinan Deriş, Paid Media and Project Manager on Team GaryVee

2. “99 percent of the things don’t matter.”

This is the thesis of most of the things we go through in life. Family first—their good health and well-being are what we should be grateful for. Everything else is just part of the journey called life, and especially in times like these, where most of us are able to spend so much quality time with our loved ones, we still see so much complaining and unhappiness. It’s so important to get this perspective and focus on things you can control, first and foremost—your mindset.  —Siddharth Astir, Brand Manager for Gary Vaynerchuk

3. “How can you beat me when I’m playing inside my own head?”

This funny thing we call life can be boiled down to our experiences in the world and our reactions to those experiences. If you can manage to shut out the rest of the world and all of the external pressures that come as a first-class citizen of modern society— to play your own game—things start to get really fun. Really good reflections in one of my favorite quotes from the great Mahatma Gandhi. “We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our bodies. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”  —Sam Craig, Lead Developer for Gary Vaynerchuk

4. “You have to do. It’s how you learn, it’s how you start.”

Gary’s always preaching, do. I run before I walk. I do. This resonates with me because it’s all I got. My wife and I live by the phrase, “your intent will be your authenticity.” For us and our family, it’s about your intent and that speaks to your character. —Justin Novello, Community & Influencer Relationships Manager for Team Gary Vee

5. “My advice to everyone is patience. Your lack of patience is killing you. Things take longer than you think. Deploy patience.”

Often, we want success or results without putting in the work and having a long-term view. The more patient you are with your process, the more it is likely to stick and grow and have true meaning (leading to the results you want).—Maha Abouelenein, Chief Value Officer for Gary Vaynerchuk

6. “You should’ve gone to VaynerMedia and rose like the phoenix. But then, you had to go to Virginia on business and got hit by a car and you died at 31. That’s life.”

Decisions are scary, but what’s scarier is regret. You’ll never know what life can throw at you, so squeezing every second you have because you don’t know when your death sentence is it what really drives me to be the best version of myself, and what keeps things in perspective. —May Niu, Strategist on TeamGaryVee
