Joe Rogan’s Diet, Explained

UFC commentating legend Joe Rogan has a hectic schedule. Aside from his UFC gig, Rogan is an actor, a comedian, a TV host, a popular podcaster and, lest we forget, a state champion in taekwondo. He’s undeterred by all of these commitments and manages to maintain a strict diet that has left him looking close to half his age. What’s his secret?

As he explained on an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, he maps out what he intends to accomplish each week concerning his fitness and diet.

“I schedule my workouts every Sunday,” Rogan said. “I schedule everything that I’m going to do during the week. I say, ‘I have to do yoga two times this week,’ and ‘I have to lift weights three times this week’ and ‘I have to run twice this week.’ And however I fit that in, I fit that in.”

As for his nutrition, Rogan maintains a clean diet, designed to supply his body and mind with all of the vitamins and minerals it needs to keep moving fluidly.

“The diet is pretty strict in terms of no bread, very few carbs, no sugar, no bullshit,” he said. “Healthy food, a lot of vegetables and a lot of game meat, mostly wild game. I take vitamin supplements every day. I take multivitamins, I take probiotics, I take vitamin B12 and D. I do everything that I can to put my body and my brain in a good place, so I’m keeping my engine smooth. I’m changing my oil, I’m changing my spark plugs and I’m making sure that it’s operating. It’s not going to be perfect, but I know that I’ve done my best to keep it operating to the best it can.”

Rogan is also a firm believer in the power behind intermittent fasting, which involves adopting an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Rogan opts for a 16-hour fast by extending the fast into the late morning, skipping breakfast.

Additionally, as if he didn’t have anything else going on, Rogan co-founded Onnit supplements, which provides health products to those “hoping to achieve a new level of well-being.” One supplement that Rogan has given particular airtime to, along with other athletes and even neuroscientists, is the Alpha Brain supplement. Clinical studies proving it not only helps with enhancing focus but also memory.

So there you have it folks, exercise well and eat even better, nothing too wild (side-eye emoji).

Keep up with Rogan and all his podcasts guests here.

6 Sneaker Trends We Want to See This NBA Season

Last year, NBA commissioner Adam Silver let players wear any color shoe they wanted, and if year one was any indication, things are about to get weird.

NBA sneaker culture has consumed itself, and we’re excited to see what happens next. Because once even something as integral to basketball culture as sneakers becomes this widely talked about, in order to remain cool, it must be undercut in some way.

Ugly is trendy, performance sneakers are not. Puma and Converse are signing the cool kids. Someone is going to have a laceless signature shoe, and it’s time players start talking trash with their shoes.

Adam Silver gave an inch. Time to take 5,280 feet.

NBA Sneaker King PJ Tucker Gets an Off-the-Court Shoe

Performance basketball shoes are a dying market, while streetwear continues to boom. The issue lies in the fact that the collection of young men with the most off-the-court streetwear influence are also NBA players. The Jordan brand, still king of lifestyle/basketball sneakers, has remained unfazed by trends and been reluctant to lean into hype culture.

There’s space for a “basketball” brand to invest in a line of signature lifestyle sneakers that don’t release in the shadow of the player’s signature performance shoes like Russell Westbrook’s or James Harden’s.

Jordans are cool and timeless because they have on-court basketball clout, but are largely worn off the court. Introducing a lifestyle shoe to run parallel to any of the marquee guys like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry seems contrived.

However, dropping a signature line by NBA’s shoe king without a performance/lifestyle designation, PJ Tucker is authentic to both shoe culture and himself. And if Tucker wears it, it’s cool.

Sneaker Underdogs Continue to Close Gap on Big Box Brands

Puma made this concept hum last year, and now it’s something we know we can count on heading into this season. Puma added RJ Barrett and D’Angelo Russell to get to 15 league signees, but it’s the young core—Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagley III, Michael Porter Jr., Terry Rozier—that will be much more visible this year. Plus, Marc Stein of The New York Times reported Puma is likely to sign IG style influencer Kyle Kuzma.

Converse inked rising star Kelly Oubre, and New Balance is making waves with Kawhi Leonard, Gordon Hayward and now DeJounte Murray.

Deep Cuts

2019 is weird. Clashing is on-trend, flaunting luxury is played out and vintage rules all. There’s white-space for semi-ironically wearing And1 Tai Chis and getting the same love you would show someone rocking a 2001 Sacramento Kings Doug Christie jersey. Latrell Sprewell Spinners, Starburys, Jamal Crawford J. Crossover 1s and even those ugly John Wall Reebok Zigtechs might be a vibe.

<code><p class = "twitter-tweet"></p></code>

Vintage Vintage

NBA players have always been open-minded when choosing game shoes. And after Silver opened the gates, players flooded our feeds with rare sneakers, which means retros got a lot of spin. Montrezl Harrell wore Nigel Sylvester AJ1s, and players regularly wore re-releases of signature shoes from the 2000s.

But this is the year we should see the rarest of shoes. Look out for someone to rock original releases from the ‘80s like this Jordan 1 OG Chicago (1985) listed on StockX for $30,000. I’ve got money on PJ Tucker.

V2 Laceless Sneakers

It’s a big year for shoe tech. Almost like the dunk contest in the last few years, it felt like creativity was tapped out within the current confines of shoe design. Adam Silver denied these reflective Yeezys because they were distracting, but thankfully Nike and Adidas found their Orlando Magic mascot spinning on a hoverboard in V1 of laceless sneakers.

We should be able to expect V2 of laceless sneakers, and pending popularity, should only be a matter of time before we’re copping a signature player shoe sans string.

Petty Personalization

This may not happen, but it should. This is a pitch to those in charge.

Occasion colorways have been successful in the past. Nike dropped KD 11 Sonics for Durant’s return to Seattle in 2018, and Kuzma earned some clout for rocking the Kobe 6 Grinch. The one—and I mean one—trend the NBA could build from the NFL is the shoe customization. Instead of gaudy shoe murals, we’re more interested in seeing shoemakers use their powers for pettiness.

NBA players could utilize the concept for pettiness. Obviously Joel Embiid comes to mind—imagine Under Armour commissioning a designer to paint a re-enactment of Embiid dunking on Westbrook for their first 2019 matchup, or even producing a limited run commemorating his poster. Patrick Beverley could show up to Houston with a sketch of Harden slapping away Chris Paul’s hand in the huddle. Oh, man.

In Praise of Bernie Sanders, Sports Icon

At ONE37pm, we don’t often cover subjects related to politics. But inevitably, our worlds intersect, and if a presidential candidate has a past of explosive physical prowess, then the fans need to know.

Despite his curmudgeonly appearance, beloved Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is actually one of the most accomplished athletes of the 2020 presidential race. In a 2015 interview with CNBC, Sanders commented on the lore surrounding his athletic ability. During his time at James Madison High School in Brooklyn, New York, the former Burlington mayor apparently ran an astounding 4:37 mile. Although it’s difficult to find written confirmation of Sanders’ 4:37 mile PR (we’re talking about the 1950s, after all), the record of his performance as a competent runner is easily accessible. In the aforementioned interview, Sanders told CNBC he had placed third in the city in the indoor one-mile run. Seems pretty fast to us.

<code><p class = "twitter-tweet"></p></code>

One of Sanders’ training partners from his running career, Lou Howort recalled in a 2016 interview with The Washington Post: “Bernie was a very well-known runner from his freshman year.” Howort added that Sanders was “probably the top runner in the city for ninth-graders. He was an elite runner at that point.” Perhaps the modern voter doesn’t associate Sanders with unbridled athletic potential, but maybe they should. He placed third in a 2.5-mile run covered by The Times in 1958. This guy was absolutely scooping medals up left and right.

<code><p class = "twitter-tweet"></p></code>

His currently hunched posture aside, young Sanders stood a tall, lean 6 feet. A powerhouse athlete, his former team captain, Richard Creditor, told The Post, “I remember Bernie being tall. Good athlete. Fairly big guy. Good runner.” Clearly, Sanders’ classmates remember the presidential hopeful as a runner to be reckoned with. We’ll have to defer to the word of the senator on whether he actually recorded such an admirable mile time, but one thing is clear: Bernie Sanders is the fastest candidate running for president.

As a bonus, here’s an enormous fit Bernie has pulled off in the recent past:

8 Ridiculous Elon Musk Facts

While there are tons of facts you probably don’t know about Tesla CEO Elon Musk, some are more shocking than others. The tech entrepreneur is the wealthiest South African billionaire by net worth, holds three citizenships, has six children and has been married three times. Even more interestingly, Musk hinted several times during his childhood and adolescent years that he would one day become one of the most successful innovators to date.

1. Musk read the entire encyclopedia at age 9

Musk has always been a lover of books. He allegedly read Encyclopedia Britannica from front to back at the age of 9. “I was raised by books. Books, and then my parents,” Musk said in an interview with Rolling Stone. He sometimes even read for 10 hours a day, consuming everything from The Lord of the RingsThe Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and the Foundation series all before his teenage years.

2. Musk also taught himself computer programming at the age of 9

Age 9 was a big year for Musk. Aside from reading the encyclopedia, Musk taught himself how to program. Three years later, at only 12 years old, he created a space-themed PC video game called Blastar. He then sold the code for Blastar for $500 to a computer magazine. The game can still be played online.

3. Musk once lived on a budget of $1 a day

When Musk first moved to North America, he made it a priority to save money. With a diet of mostly oranges, hot dogs and pasta, purchased in bulk, he managed to live on $1 a day. Frugality is a smart and common practice for many successful business owners, as it allows them to focus their time and money on their pursuits and not material items and experiences.

4. Musk and his roommate ran a nightclub out of their house in college

During his time at the University of Pennsylvania, Musk and his roommate lived in a large off-campus house. The two agreed to turn it into a nightclub to pay the rent. The nightclub attracted as many as 1,000 guests per night—a true entrepreneurial success.

5. Musk has signed the Giving Pledge

Musk is among a few business moguls who have pledged to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropic efforts. Other signees include Bill Gates, Sir Richard Branson, Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg. Before even signing the pledge, Musk organized his own charity, the Musk Foundation. According to the website, grants are made in support of renewable energy research and advocacy; human space exploration research and advocacy; pediatric research; and science and engineering education.

6. Musk owns a submarine car from a James Bond film

Musk is known for owning a vehicle a bit cooler than a Tesla—an actual submarine car. He purchased the “Wet Nellie,” a Lotus submarine car prop from The Spy Who Loved Me. It’s been reported that he plans to convert it into a real car that transforms into a submarine. The possibilities are endless with this tech inventor, and we could all possibly be driving submarines created by Musk in the future.

7. Musk was the inspiration for Tony Stark

It makes total sense that Musk is the inspiration for Tony Stark. Stark, also known as Ironman, is a superhero and serial entrepreneur, similar to Musk, just without the superpowers. Robert Downey Jr., the actor behind the character, reportedly wanted to sit down with Musk to better understand how to take on the role. Parts of Iron Man 2 were also filmed at SpaceX and Musk made a cameo appearance in the film.

8. Musk dropped out of Stanford on his second day

Similar to other top business owners and entrepreneurs, Musk dropped out of college to start his own company. He was pursuing a graduate degree in physics but left Stanford University after his second day as a student. Seeing an opportunity to hone in on the internet boom, Musk created Zip2, which provided online newspapers with maps and business directories. He sold the company for $307 million in 1999.

The Definitive Guide to Launching a Successful TikTok

The chances are high that in the last year, you’ve heard about everyone’s new favorite app—TikTok. According to Business Insider, this digital giant has quickly been on the rise and has upheld its title of “The Most Downloaded App” with over 1.2 billion downloads worldwide.

When you open up the app, you will scroll to see a flood of entertaining activity that is nearly impossible to stop watching—from funny pets to people lip-synching, to publications like The Washington Post showing a must-see, behind-the-scenes look into their fun office life. There’s something for everyone.

If you’ve been wondering what this popular video-sharing app is all about, you’ve probably heard from the social media gurus that you need to get started on TikTok. Right. Now.

We understand the fear of missing out, especially with all of the hype around this new social media platform. Whether you are a millennial, a boomer, a zoomer or a brand, this is your breakdown on how to launch your own successful TikTok.

1. Use Trending Hashtags
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

Hashtags play a major role for creators on TikTok and act as a great way to get in front of more people. On the discover page, there is a lineup of the current top trending hashtags on the platform. The hashtags consist of challenges, jokes, funny effects and other culturally relevant themes. Under the trending hashtags, you can scroll for a while (which is, let’s be real—hours) to see the top videos under that hashtag at the moment. However, you are not limited to only creating videos that apply to that list of idea starters—TikTok is an anything-goes-type-of-app that lets your creative heart fly. Use the currently trending hashtags as a launchpad.

2. Use Trending Music in Your Videos
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

It has never been easier to include music in your videos than through the TikTok platform. When uploading content, you can attach trending, newly released and featured music to your videos, conveniently broken down by genre. As a bonus, you should create your own “sounds,” where other creators can use your sounds in their videos. By clicking the moving disc at the bottom of your video, you can watch the videos made by other creators on the app who used your “sound.” This introduces a virality factor that is unparalleled on other platforms.

An epic example of someone utilizing this feature is the viral sensation Lil Nas X. According to Billboard Music, after people were first introduced to his “Old Town Road” song on TikTok, it shattered music records and became the longest-reigning number one hit in the 61-year history of the Billboard Hot 100. Use this function to audio-brand your content and reach new audiences.

3. Edit Your Videos in the App
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

TikTok is extremely user-friendly for creators because all content can be created within the app. There is no need for third-party editing software or fancy Photoshop skills. Adding captions to your videos is a great tool for narration and you can even edit the amount of time a caption is displayed on the screen. You can also include music and effects all with a touch of a button natively on the platform. Use these organic tools to build your content.

4. Discovering the “For You” Page
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

The “For You” page, located on your homepage, features creators who you don’t follow—yet. This is a great way to find new videos and, hopefully, where your videos will be featured if the algorithm picks them up as viral. Make sure to tag #fyp and #foryoupage in your caption copy for a chance to be featured here.

5. Things to Remember Before Hitting “Upload”
Screnshot via Avital

The copy on TikTok is limited to 100 characters, so your captions should be thoughtful but concise to give the gist of the video in a few sentences. The sweet spot for a successful TikTok video length is around 15 to 30 seconds. And don’t forget your crucial hashtags.

6. Engage with Other Creators Through Duets and Reactions
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

TikTok has included a great feature to engage with your friends and favorite creators. By clicking the three dots on the right side of your screen, you can “duet” or “react” to videos, adding another creative dimension to the videos you love to watch. By clicking the moving disc at the bottom of your uploaded video, you can see other users who have reacted to your own videos.

7. Read and Respond to ALL Comments
Screenshot via Avital Shtapura

Community management is crucial on social media. As on every platform, responding to comments is the best way to engage with your followers and see what they liked (or didn’t like) about your video. This is the main way to build a close-knit community with your followers and ultimately bring so much value to your audience. This also helps the creative brainstorms and lets you in on what your audience would like to see from you as a creator.
