This Week’s NBA G-League Spotlight And Updates

Another fun week down in the land of the G-League as we march closer to the All-Star festivities in Cleveland. First up, we’ve got some news straight from the G-League themselves in regards to make-up games and scheduling. Six new games have been added to the 2022 calendar along with three reschedules that were postponed Dec. 27 and Jan. 4. Additionally, it was announced on the 25th, that the NBA All-Star 2022 Clorox Rising Stars game will feature four players from the G-League this year which is super dope.

The four NBA G League Ignite players will be selected by NBA G League head coaches, which means players will certainly be showing up and showing out these next couple of weeks to earn one of the four coveted spots.   • Rio Grande Valley Vipers guard Daishen Nix was named NBA G League Player of the Week. Nix made his NBA debut with the Houston Rockets in December, and averaged 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists over this past week. Nix could definitely be one of those four spots if he keeps it up.
  • Ignite’s Michael Foster Jr. hit his career high of 28 points 
  • Last but not least, College Park’s Cat Barber rallied a career high 14 ast, which isn’t  something you see very often in terms of career bests

Meanwhile, Raptors 905 has been hot with a 9-2 record. 905 is 7-0 at home, so the Bulls are going to have a tough fight. Meanwhile, Iowa is looking to work their way up to the top of the standings, as they aren’t too far from the number one spot Agua Caliente holds. Speaking of Agua Caliente, they’ve been, well, Caliente. At the moment they are number one in the West at 7-2.

Why Hansel Enmanuel Donato Should Be A Household Name

When looking for sources of inspiration, it’s not uncommon to look towards professional sports. Whether it’s Joe Burrow coming back from a devastating injury to lead the Bengals to the Superbowl, or the Los Angeles Lakers rallying around the passing of Kobe Bryant to bring home the 2020 NBA championship. These moments resonate so deeply with fans because they are relatable. Everyone has had to cope with the loss of a loved one, or endure the hardships of rehabbing an injury. Seventeen-year-old Hansel Enmanuel from the Dominican Republic inflicts a different emotion when you watch him block shots and slam down dunks on defenders. That’s because Hansel tragically lost one of his arms in an accident at the age of six.

Hansel Salvador Donato was a former professional basketball player in the Dominican Republic. Rarely would the pro-hooper not have his son, Hansel Enmanuel Donato, by his side. It was here Hansel Enmauel’s initial love for basketball sprung. During one of his father’s games that he couldn’t attend, he  was climbing an old concrete wall that would end up collapsing on him from the chest down. After being rushed to the hospital, he was told that they would have to amputate his arm. It was then at the age of six that Hansel Emmanuel Donato began his basketball journey. 

In 2020, nearly a decade after his accident, Donato was getting significantly better than his peers at hoops and would routinely post clips of himself playing on Instagram. That’s when his father’s former teammate and current head coach at Life Christian Academy, Moises Micael, gave him a call to move to Florida and play for his team. It didn’t take long for Donato to make a lasting impact on his teammates. 

During one of his first practices with the Life Christian Academy, the team was running a routine layup-line drill. The whole team is done with practice once everyone makes one layup. The caveat being that if you miss, you have to do twenty push-ups. You can imagine how eerily silent the gym got as Donato missed his layup. The team looked toward coach Micael, not sure how to react. Donato didn’t flinch. 

He dropped to the floor and performed twenty one armed push-ups, instilling a new sense of pride and hunger in his teammates. 

Hansel Enmanuel Donato now sits as a three star recruit, and goes viral constantly for his high flying and emphatic jams. Currently Donato has received a D1 offer to Tennessee State University as he finishes his Junior year at Life Christian Academy. Averaging 25.9 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game, this won’t be the last offer that Donato receives to play D1 basketball. Donato plays with such a high level of intensity and heart, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the NBA one day.

Prime Video’s “Reacher” Is Heavy on Clichés and Light on Substance

Most movies and TV shows fall victim to using clichés, and as a viewer, you have to hope that the entire story isn’t forced to rely on those platitudes to support the plot.

In Prime Video’s Reacher, that is unfortunately not true. The show is so overly dependent on them that it’s hard not to feel that you’ve seen this entire story before by the time the first season’s eight episodes have finished. Based on the “Jack Reacher” character from the series of novels written by Lee Child, Reacher borrows elements from the first book titled Killing Floor.

Per Prime Video’s description: “When retired Military Police Officer Jack Reacher is arrested for a murder he did not commit, he finds himself in the middle of a deadly conspiracy full of dirty cops, shady businessmen and scheming politicians. With nothing but his wits, he must figure out what is happening in Margrave, Georgia.”

As you can see, a “rogue enforcer/ex-cop takes on small-town corruption” is not a novel concept, but it is possible to put an interesting spin on it. Reacher fails at that, and when the twists arrive, you can see them coming from miles away.

Jack Reacher, or just Reacher, as everyone (including his mother!) calls him, is played by Alan Ritchson, who is perhaps best known for his roles on Smallville where he played Aquaman/Arthur Curry, and as Thad Castle on Blue Mountain State. 

Ritchson, an already large human, bulked up and gained over 30 pounds for the role. He aimed to look more like the Reacher envisioned by Child in the novels rather than the version that Tom Cruise embodied in the two film adaptations where he portrayed the character. In being faithful to the character in the books, Ritchson succeeds wholeheartedly.

The dialogue is extremely clumsy and, as you probably guessed, riddled with clichés, but Ritchson can maneuver past it and deliver a solid performance.

However, when the character itself isn’t great to begin with, the viewer’s first instinct might be to blame the actor rather than the writer. In the case of Reacher, that is unfair to Ritchson and Lee Child.

Ritchson is particularly great in the action scenes, delivering the moves with shocking brutality and force, which I’m sure was met with Child’s approval.

Word of warning for those who are a little squeamish: Reacher is a bloody and brutal show with plenty of bone-crunching and killing to be found.

Supporting Reacher are the two honest cops in Margrave, Detective Oscar Finley (Malcolm Goodwin) and Roscoe Conklin (Willa Fitzgerald). Similar to Ritchson’s take on Reacher, both Fitzgerald and Goodwin play their roles as well as they can, given the script.

Finley is a Boston detective who recently moved to Georgia to escape the memories of his deceased wife, and Conklin is one of the newer members of the small-town police force. Both recognize that there is something wrong in Margrave but, until Reacher arrives, they are unable to do anything about it.

Without spoiling anything, Fitzgerald is particularly shortchanged by the script, being boiled down to Reacher’s love interest. She does have some stand-out moments but is never truly given a chance to shine.

It works to the show’s strength that the protagonists are the best performances because the villains are so easily forgettable that when it’s revealed who is behind it all, you’ll say to yourself, “oh yeah, they’re in the show as well.”

If you’re in the mood for a straightforward, action-heavy TV series that, at times, is very fun, then you can do a whole lot worse than Reacher.

However, when there are better options available and ones that are far more memorable such as HBO Max’s Peacemaker, Disney+’s The Mandalorian, or even Prime Video’s own Jack Ryan, it’s easy to skip Reacher.

Reacher premieres on Prime Video on February 4th, with an eight-episode first season.

An Intro to Recur: The NFT Collectible Platform Set To Take Off

For those who are familiar with NFTs, Recur has been a hot name in the space since securing investments in 2021 from names such as Gary VaynerchukJason DeruloJoe Lubin, and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen (to name a few).

With partnerships already announced with some of the world’s leading media franchises and IP, such as Hello Kitty, Viacom, CBS, Care Bears, and many major universities, the future appears to be extremely bright for the start-up.

On December 9th, 2021, the Recur Pass—dubbed “Your Portal to the Metaverse”—was launched to the public for 24-hours only, and 64,031 passes were sold for $300/each. Because these passes will never be minted again, the only way to purchase one is on Recur’s secondary market, and the resale value has been hot, with the floor price of a single pass currently set at $680. To date, there have been over $3.6 million transacted on the secondary market.

The most expensive pass that has sold was the rarest one that Recur offered – the “Pure White Zero Pass.” It closed the day before the rest of the passes were made available at Christie’s Auction for 96ETH (approx. $420k at the time).

I recently had a chance to sit down with co-founders and co-CEOs Trevor George and Zach Bruch to talk about the emerging digital collectibles platform and what lies ahead for collectors.

ONE37pm: Since the day the Recur Passes were minted, many of the pass holders have been wondering exactly what the utility behind the passes will be. Can you give some clarification?

Trevor George: The way that we viewed the passes was half an art project, in that it was a generative piece of art, and then half utility-based NFTs for our community. We are ushering in these massive brands. 99.9% of the true fans of those brands are probably not in the NFT space or crypto. They have probably heard about it but likely have not purchased anything yet. 

The other side of the reality is that there is a community of passionate individuals who have been following along the NFT space and what web3 is doing for over a year now. While that’s a relatively small percentage, it is extremely important because it’s those individuals that are going to bootstrap this industry, alongside Recur and others.

Imagine if 20 years ago you were given the opportunity from Pokemon to buy the very first Pokemon cards ever made.

The point of the project was to acknowledge the fact that these individuals in the NFT community at large exist. We wanted to give them a mechanism or a form of utility that the average fan base might not have. Those people are going to come in, but they’re going to arrive after all of us who were already here. Why not give everyone a chance as a sort of thank you for pulling this industry together?

As it relates to the utility, imagine if 20 years ago you were given the opportunity from Pokemon to buy the very first Pokemon cards ever made. If for some reason, there was a rabid community, and they said, “Look, for you all, you get the chance to buy our first cards. They will be labeled the first edition and will be the first cards ever minted from us. You will get access to that sale.”

We took the same approach as step one of the utility. We said, “alright, anyone who holds a Recur pass will essentially get early beta access to the first drops of each of the experiences that we launch for our brands. It’s not every single time that Recur pass holders will be whitelisted. It’s just the very beginning. The very first season. The very first line of collectibles that ever come out. It could be a four-week drop event. It could be an eight-week drop event. It might be once, but it’s arguably going to be the most important and prolific in the brand’s history because they are going to be the first collectibles that ever come out. 

Zach Bruch: There are other ways that this can happen. In some instances, it’s giving them the first access in which they are lining up and purchasing. In other instances, we are giving them access in ways. For example, all of a sudden, in their Recur account, there may be a surprise waiting for them related to a new branded experience. That keeps it exciting and fun. Over time, we are going to continue to create more and more utility for the Recur pass holders. We’ve announced this concept of early access already, and there are a ton of other things we have planned that we are really excited to roll out. 

We can’t wait for the community to experience it because we know we have a really unique approach that’s going to be super compelling. 

ONE37pm: You guys sold 64,031 of these Recur passes. Will every single one of those people who bought a pass be able to purchase the early drops? Will there be enough collectibles for everybody?

Trevor: There will be enough supply. It depends on how it shakes out. Similar to a physical venue, even if every single attendee of the event was a VIP, even VIPs can’t get in if it’s at capacity. If they sleep past their alarm and come in at the very last minute, the supply might be consumed. What we would urge the community to do is even if you hold a pass, you should try to be first in line. We are going to design it so that there is enough quantity for them, but there is never a guarantee because some could purchase multiple quantities, as an example. It’s important that the community lines themselves up. It could also happen in reverse. There could be more supply than needed. But we can’t guarantee that every single person will be able to get one of every single drop. 

ONE37pm: To the rarity end of the passes, let’s say you were lucky enough to get a full house or some other rare property. Does that get you any advanced level of utility?

Zach: The basic utility is the same for every pass holder. However, over the coming year, you are going to see certain subsets of pass holders receive other types of special opportunities, awards, or access in addition to the early access. 

ONE37pm: As for the collectibles, are you planning on some of them having utility as well? 

Zach: Yes. Everything that we’re doing, we think very long-term. We aren’t building one-off drops. Everything we do will have utility. We’re making things so that they can be interoperable so that collectors can participate in other universes and worlds throughout the web3 ecosystem. There’s going to be different collectibility and gamification within our experiences—Gaming-light, collecting style games where you can also earn NFTs, not just purchase them. Going forward, there are going to be all sorts of other utilities for these assets. Again, everything we are doing has immense utility and is being built for the future so that as this entire space develops, collectors can participate and not just be stuck with an asset in an app or on a website. You will be able to take it with you where you want. 

ONE37pm: Any idea of the cost of entry on some of the drops? 

Zach: Our whole idea, in general, is that we want everything to be accessible to everybody. Call it $15-100. It could be a little more or a little less, but the whole goal is to make it accessible to everyone to participate and join. And again, not all NFTs are going to be purchasable. Some will have to be earned through participation. Community members really will be rewarded. That’s a big part of it. 

ONE37pm: Will you be able to use crypto to purchase the drops?

Zach: In terms of payment options, you will be able to buy with a credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and crypto. We support over 200 countries. People bought passes in over 80 different countries, so it’s really amazing to see that so many people from all over the world will be participating and be part of this community and the experiences we will launch.

ONE37pm: Recur recently put out a tweet that you were going to be able to cash people out in February. Is that still on target?

Zach: Yes, that is still the target.

ONE37pm: You mentioned Trevor’s extensive background in licensing. I would love to get some more information about that and how it might relate to the future of Recur. 

Trevor: I grew up in my family’s business called TrevCo, and I led the digital transformation of physical merchandise in licensing from brick and mortar to direct-to-consumer. Over the past ten years, since I graduated from the University of Michigan, right when I graduated, it was basically all physical merch business was done at brick and mortar. That’s when Amazon started to become prolific but licensed IP never really sold direct-to-consumer. They are usually sold through a retailer to the consumer. I was the guy that built that entire business. I grew the largest direct-to-consumer business for licensed merchandise in the world. I was then known as the guy that sort of transformed how licensed physical merchandise was sold to consumers. When I learned about NFTs, I realized right then and there that my entire career of helping license brands directly to the consumer could be replicated again, this time with digital goods. I didn’t have a blockchain or crypto background, so that’s how Zach and I came together to form Recur. 

We’ve been public about the partnerships that the public is aware of to date, but I just want to show you one thing on my family business’s website. Look at this slide (posted below).

ONE37pm: As a Recur pass holder, that REALLY excites me. 

Trevor: Yeah! It’s going to be really cool.

Zach: Today, we have about 135 full-time employees with deep crypto experience as well as licensing and gaming experience. 

Our crypto and tech teams come from some of the largest exchanges and tech companies like Circle, Kraken, and Twilio. And some even come from some of the largest protocols, including things like USDC, which is today a $49 billion dollar asset.

On the licensing side and gaming side, our leadership team comes from Disney, Warner Brothers, and NBCU, where they held executive positions.

We brought in the best-in-class people to help build out the RECUR vision. When we were starting this business, it was crucial for us to bring in the best talent in the world, and we continue to do so. We want to do every single aspect right because we recognize that we are helping to bootstrap an entire industry.

We are excited for the community to see all that’s to come. The IP that’s about to enter this ecosystem has some of the most robust and expansive fanbases in the world. It will be amazing to see all the new fans and collectors join this community.  

ONE37pm: Will the collectibles be animated and have AR capabilities?

Trevor: All forms. There will be different types of forms per IP. One IP might start 2DP, move into 3-D, and then move into AR. One might be all 3-D and motion. One might be all AR. It just depends. One might be only illustrated. One might be CGI and video. You can imagine sports will be more towards the latter, whereas other IP—maybe like Hello Kitty or Care Bears—might start with illustration and can move beyond that. What we see out in the market is one lane for each IP. We don’t really feel that needs to be the case because the whole point of what we are building is the brand’s official NFT destination. It’s theirs. 

I powered their official storefronts from a merchandising standpoint. On those storefronts, they had a bunch of different categories of products. It wasn’t just one type. They had apparel and clothing, and they had toys. They had DVDs. I think as we look at NFTs and how brands want to speak to their consumers, these will be the official storefronts of digital collectibles. We’ll want to include the different categories of NFTs that might be available. We’re going to launch them over time in more of a collectible style. We definitely see it as being multi-format.

ONE37pm: Anything else that you want the community to know? 

Zach: Yes. Another key thing about Recur is the concept of interoperability and how we allow for it. You are going to start hearing that word a lot. You will see over the coming months that you will be able to withdraw your NFTs across multiple different blockchains. We’ll continue to roll out more and more chains—so as this space continues to grow, you will be able to take these assets and engage with them all over the web3 world and also the web2 world. 

We are excited to help usher the concept of cross-chain interoperability into this space because we think that will take the collectible and NFT space even further than what we have seen today.

Sony is Set to Acquire Bungie – What’s This Mean for PlayStation?

The word “acquisition” is becoming a theme when you consider the game of one-upmanship between the Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation camps. In the first month of the near year, Microsoft shocked the world by announcing its plans to acquire Activision Blizzard thanks to a $68.7 billion deal. It’s wild to fathom just how many more blockbuster IPs the house of Xbox now has within its vault thanks to this new deal – Call of Duty, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Crash Bandicoot, and even Candy Crush Saga now fall under the neon umbrella held up by the CEO of Microsoft Gaming Phill Spencer.

And on the final day of the new year, Sony looked at what its competition did and pretty much replied with a “hold my beer” move. Now Sony is set to acquire development studio Bungie, which is most known for starting the Halo series and working on the Destiny IP as an independent studio. A PlayStation Blog post from PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan provided further details on that monumental acquisition. “First off, I want to be very clear to the community that Bungie will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher, ” he stated. “Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers.”

Now when I heard about this deal, it made a ton of sense to me. Sony’s really not known for getting its hands on publishers like Microsoft – they’re more concerned with acquiring development studios. Just last year, Sony announced its acquisition of quality studios such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, Firesprite, Nixxes Software, and Valkyrie Entertainment. And now Bungie is set to join the likes of popular Sony first-party development houses that include Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, and Guerrilla Games. At the moment, I envision a situation where Bungie is allowed to keep working on Destiny 2 as a multiplatform experience. Plus it seems likely that Sony will honor Bungie’s multiplatform deals for any unannounced games coming down the pipeline.

But at some point, I get the sense that Sony will take advantage of its Bungie deal by asking the studio to craft a PS5 exclusive project. And seeing as how Bungie is mostly attached to the first-person shooter genre, it makes all the sense in the world for the studio to craft an original IP that provides Sony’s gaming platform with a legit multiplayer experience (which is something the PS5 sorely needs). There are rumors swirling around Sony PlayStation studios already hard at work on multiplayer-centric games (their London Studio is reportedly working on something in that regard, plus Firesprite is said to be developing a new Twisted Metal). Due to Microsoft getting its hands on the publisher behind Call of Duty, it seems like Sony is revving up its multiplayer game development in order to fill the void left by the series’ absence in the coming years.

Another great proposition that could come from Sony PlayStation acquiring Bungie is the studio’s first-person shooter experience being tapped into to revive some older IPs. As soon as I heard about this acquisition, my mind immediately went to Bungie working on a brand entry within the dormant Resistance series. I’d pay good money to see Bungie revive the human vs. alien conflict that sat at the heart of the PS3 exclusive FPS franchise. It’d even be cool to see Bungie get the chance to work on a new Killzone or even breathe new life into the forgotten PS3 FPS MAG (the immense power of the PS5 could do wonders for that game’s original 256 player count!).

Another thought that popped into my head when this Sony-Bungie deal came across my timeline was a bit less positive. While Bungie is a top-tier development studio, I think Sony would have been much better off bringing out the big bucks to acquire a publisher. If Sony ended up getting its hands on a major AAA publisher, such as Sega, Capcom, or Square Enix, I feel like they’d be much better off since Sony would now have the exclusive rights to publish some of the biggest IPs in Japanese gaming. Based on some further comments from Jim Ryan during a GamesIndustry.biz interview, it’s clear that monumental deals like that may not be too far off. When it comes to future acquisitions, Ryan noted “We should absolutely expect more. We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go.”

If I’m Sony and am still focused on adding more development studios to the roster, I’d make a serious play for FromSoftware (Dark Souls, Bloodborne), Level-5 (Dark Cloud, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch), and Ember Lab (Kena: Bridge of Spirits). The sky’s truly the limit at this point. Don’t be too surprised to hear about even more mind-blowing acquisition announcements from Sony and Microsoft as 2022 rolls on.
